One of my favourite authors is JRR Tolkien, and while I enjoy his books “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit,” I really enjoy the movie adaptations and have watched them often enough that I am able to quote many of the lines…just ask my husband. I couldn’t help but think of one of Gandalf’s lines to young Peregrin Took, aka Pippen, when it comes to the idea of having another in control of every aspect of your life.

They were the experts in God’s Laws; their sole occupation was to teach the people how to live in obedience to God; they were strict in their adherence not only to the written Torah as contained in the Scriptures, but were equally committed to obeying the Oral Torah, which detailed the rules for adhering to each of the 613 laws…and of which there were many more. Want to be a great leader? Want to succeed? Want to get ahead? Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience might make the list, but certainly wouldn’t make up the top five. Want to become spiritually mature? Want to follow Jesus? Want to be identified with him? For too many, they still don’t make the top of the list…to our own detriment.
