Season: Beatitudes
Episode 3: “Blessed Are the Humble”
Today’s Bible Bite: Matthew 5:5 – “God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.” (NLT)

Video Story:

“’God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ 7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” (James 4:6b-7, NLT)

Many people mistakenly think, that to feel important or to ‘get ahead,’ they need to put others down and brag about their own accomplishments. But that’s just pride—not the good kind of pride that helps us to know we are special to God, but the wrong kind of pride that makes us think we don’t need God at all. When we are humble/meek, we recognize that we aren’t any more special to God than anyone else, but that He loves us all equally. He wants to help each one of us. Unfortunately, when we let the wrong kind of pride takeover, we convince ourselves that we are better than everyone else, we don’t need God and we certainly don’t need to follow His directions. Guess who else thinks like that? The devil! So, if you don’t want to be like him, the remedy is to be like Jesus—and stay humble, trusting God’s plan for your life!

Think about it...
• To be humble/meek means that we shouldn’t try to be more important than everyone else. When we put others down to get ahead, what is at work in us?
• The Bible tells us that God ‘opposes the proud.’ What does that mean?
• We should follow Jesus’ example, not the devil’s. Why?
• Today’s beatitude says that the humble/meek will ‘inherit the earth.’ What does that mean?

Prayer: Thank you, God, that we don’t have to be better than everyone else. You love us all equally. We don’t need to brag to feel special. And we certainly don’t want our pride to get in the way of pleasing you! Help us to be humble.
