YEAH! Church - 12 July 2020

Through the Bible in 2020

After a very exciting arrival as a baby, Jesus’ life as a kid was rather uneventful...we really know very little, so it’s safe to assume that His growing up years were pretty much like every other Jewish boy's.

Today’s Lesson: Jesus–The Kid Years

The early years in Egypt as a refugee -

Jesus at 12 years of age, lost in Jerusalem found at the Temple-

Lesson Overview:
We don’t have many details about Jesus life between the time of His birth and the beginning of His ministry when He was thirty years of age; however, there are some things we do know.
  • We all know that Jesus was born in a stable, but Mary and Joseph didn’t stay there long. Once the crowds had thinned out after the census, Joseph found a home for them in Bethlehem and this is where the wisemen found them some months later (Matthew 2:11).
  • That night, an angel warned Joseph to escape to Egypt (Matthew 2:13). The gifts that the wisemen had brought would have helped the family while they stayed in Egypt to buy the things they needed.
  • They stayed in Egypt until Joseph again had a dream telling him that King Herod, who had tried to kill Jesus, had died (Matthew 2:19-20).
  • Jesus had four brothers, James, Joseph, Judas and Simon, and at least two sisters (Mark 6:3). Jesus was the oldest brother to a large family.
  • On their family’s yearly trip to Jerusalem, when Jesus was twelve, Jesus got left behind (His parents had probably been distracted by the younger children; they thought Jesus was with relatives). It took them three days to find Him and when they did, He was at the Temple talking with the priests, and they were amazed by His understanding. Even then, He knew He was God’s Son (Luke 2:41-50)
  • Jesus was an obedient son to Mary and Joseph (Luke 2:51) and became well respected by all (2:52). He would have grown up being taught how to be a carpenter; boys were trained by their fathers in the family business, and Joseph would have taught all his sons carpentry–including Jesus

Theme Verse for 2020:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16+17

This week’s verse:
Luke 2:52 - “Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.”

Jesus had to grow up and experience all the normal things that children go through, just like you–potty training, getting teeth, learning to walk, cleaning His room, eating His vegetables (even the ones He may not have liked), having to listen to His parents, learning to be a carpenter like Joseph, and taking care of His younger brothers and sisters when needed. Jesus already knew He was the Son of God, but obeyed His earthly parents, Mary and Joseph, too. He was a good son. We can be like Jesus by obeying our parents, helping out, being kind, listening and making wise choices.
