“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock’’ (Matthew 7:24).

Crowds loved to follow Jesus. They were amazed at His miracles and liked the stories He told. But Jesus said it wasn’t enough for people to simply like the things He told them, they needed to obey too! To explain why, He told the story of two builders. One was a wise builder, who built his house on a solid foundation. When a storm came, his house stayed strong. That is what a person who obeys God is like–their life is built on a solid foundation, so that when life gets rough, they can remain strong.

But those who do not want to obey God and just want to do their own thing are like the man who built his house on sand. When the storms came, the watery sand shifted and the house fell down; it just wasn’t strong enough to stand without a good foundation. When we try to live life without God, we are liable to fall apart too when the storms of life come because we need a good foundation to rely on.

Think about it...
  • God has given us many directions on how to live life well. What rules has God given us to live by?
  • Sometimes we don’t want to have to obey God, but want to do our own thing. Why do we sometimes choose to ignore God’s directions?
  • The wise man built his house on a rock–a good foundation–the foolish man built his on the sandy beach. Why is rock a better foundation that sand?
  • How can you be certain that your life is on ‘solid ground?’

Prayer: Thank you, God, for all the stories that Jesus taught. Help us to understand their meaning and then obey. You want what is best for us. Help us to trust you and resist doing things our own way.
