Learning and living the Way of Jesus!
Daily Devotional January 6th
"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need." (Luke 12:31)
As I was reading my Bible this morning, I was struck anew by Jesus' teaching about 'treasure' and 'possessions.' How much effort do we expend on things that are not ours to be concerned over? Jesus told us not to be concerned about food, clothing, shelter--because God knows our needs and will supply. Our efforts should be spent expanding His kingdom and setting aside 'heavenly' treasure.
How differently would we live our lives if we truly believed Jesus when He gave this warning, "Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own” (v.15). Instead, "sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven" (v.33). This kind of advice certainly doesn't line up with what we hear from financial institutions and governments encouraging us to contribute now to secure our future financial well-being.
But again Jesus reminds us that no one is promised tomorrow, so why spend your time saving for an earthly retirement that we may never experience? It really is a counter-culture message. But the Bible is clear: those of us who have secured our place in God's family are required to make God's priorities our own. He has no regard for earthly 'treasure.' What He counts as truly worth pursuing is people...His overriding desire is that everyone should come to know Him and experience His love. We are His greatest treasure! Maybe rather than asking how our lives would be different if we lived like we believed Jesus' on this matter, we should consider how others lives would be changed if we lived completely in obedience to His instructions.
