There is nothing we can do to be good enough to go to heaven; but the good news is, we don’t have to. Jesus made it possible for anyone who believes in him to go to heaven. But that doesn’t mean it is easy to follow Jesus. Followers of Jesus are required to sign over their plans, possessions, their time and abilities to him.

Jesus Corrects the Religious Leaders
Matthew 23:1-30, NLT
“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 “The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses. 3 So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach. 4 They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden. 5 Everything they do is for show.”

The story of Jesus feeding 5000+ people with just five small loaves and two fish is the only miracle recorded by all four gospel writers—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It was an incredible miracle and the people were prepared to make Jesus their king on the spot. However, there is something even more amazing about this story…

“Jesus and the Man Born Blind”

"Doing Life with Jesus”
Today’s Lesson - “Jesus and the Man Born Blind”

Video Story/Resource:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4qZ2KSbdxI (Saddleback Kids – Jesus heals a man born blind)

A Man Born Blind Can See!
Jesus and his disciples were walking along and came across a man who had been born blind. Jesus made mud by spitting on the ground then smeared the mud on the man’s face, then he told him to go wash. After he did, he could see. This was amazing! But Jesus had done this miracle on the Sabbath, so the people took the man to the religious leaders.

John 9:16-, NLT – “Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath.” Others said, “But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?” So there was a deep division of opinion among them.

17 Then the Pharisees again questioned the man who had been blind and demanded, “What’s your opinion about this man who healed you?” The man replied, “I think he must be a prophet.”

18 The Jewish leaders still refused to believe the man had been blind and could now see, so they called in his parents. 19 They asked them, “Is this your son? Was he born blind? If so, how can he now see?” 20 His parents replied, “We know this is our son and that he was born blind, 21 but we don’t know how he can see or who healed him. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue. 23 That’s why they said, “He is old enough. Ask him.”

24 So for the second time they called in the man who had been blind and told him, “God should get the glory for this, because we know this man Jesus is a sinner.” 25 The man replied, “I don’t know whether he is a sinner. But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!”

26 “But what did he do? How did he heal you?” the religious leaders demanded. 27 “Look!” the man exclaimed. “I told you once. Didn’t you listen? Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?” 28 Then they cursed him and said, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses! 29 We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”

30 “Why, that’s very strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where he comes from? 31 We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will. 32 Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind. 33 If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.”

34 “You were born a total sinner!” they answered. “Are you trying to teach us?” And they threw him out of the synagogue.”

The religious leaders were determined not to believe that Jesus was from God because he did good work on the Sabbath. No matter what the man who was once blind said, they refused to believe the truth. The man, however, refused to be convinced that Jesus was a bad man. He knew that only someone who pleased God could have healed him so that he could now see.

After the leaders threw him out of the synagogue, Jesus found the man and introduced himself. The man was very thankful and worshipped Jesus, who he knew was the God’s promised Messiah.

Engage:
• The man Jesus healed had been born blind. What do you think it would have been like to see everything for the very first time?
• Jesus had healed the man on the Sabbath. Why did this make the religious leaders think he was a ‘sinner?’
• When the people took the man to the religious leaders, he could not be persuaded that Jesus was bad. What did he think about this man who had healed him?
• The religious leaders kicked the man out of the synagogue because they refused to believe him. But who did he meet shortly afterward? How did he respond to seeing Jesus?

Weekly verse:
John 5:36, NLT – “But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me.”
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for the faith of the man who had been born blind. He knew the truth and he wasn’t afraid to share it. Help me to be as bold for you too.

2022 Theme verses:
Colossians 2:6-7, NLT – “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

Jesus’ Power to Create

Week 9: Jesus’ Power to Create
Weekly Bible Bite: John 9:1-15

Video lesson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHSf2RhD2As (Douglas Talks – Why did Jesus perform miracles?)

Jesus came to earth as a man, but he was also God. Jesus did incredible miracles that proved he was God. He could make sick people well, he could use a small lunch to feed thousands of people, he could walk on water and even calmed stormy seas. Jesus also showed through his miracles that he had God’s power to create.

One day, when Jesus and his disciples came across a man born blind, Jesus gave him new eyes to see. This miracle reminds us of how God created the first man. God took dirt, shaped it into a man, then breathed into him making him come to life. Jesus spit on the ground and made a mixture of mud. He smeared it on the blind man’s face, then told him to go wash. When he had washed, he could see! Jesus wasn’t just a man…he was also God and had the power of God to create.

Family goal:
Jesus performed miracles to prove he was God. What can you do to prove that you believe he was God? ____________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]

Weekly verses:
John 5:36, NLT – “But I have a greater witness than John—my teachings and my miracles. The Father gave me these works to accomplish, and they prove that he sent me.”

Family activities:
• Colour the picture of Jesus and the man who was born blind.
• Create a fun toy by adding google eyes—a rock, pompom, whatever you like—to remind you that Jesus gave new eyes to the man born blind.

Prayer:
Thank you, God that Jesus’ miracles prove to us that he was more than just another guy. He was telling the truth when he told people he was sent by you—he was the promised Messiah. We can believe what he said was true…that he loves us, died for us and all who believe in him can live with him in heaven.
