“For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.” (2 Corinthians 7:10, NLT)

Did you know that God gets sad? It makes Him very sad when people hurt one another and even our own selves. We should be sad for the things that make God sad. In fact, when we become sad about the bad things in our lives, it is actually the first step to being truly happy! Having sorrow for doing things we shouldn’t is good and the Bible tells us that when we mourn about those things and tell God we’re sorry, we will be comforted because He will forgive us.

But there is some sadness which God cannot comfort. When we do wrong things and are sorry only because we got caught or when we’re sad because of jealousy over what someone else has, we are missing a very important part of the kind of sorrow that God will comfort—repentance. Repentance is when we feel bad about something, apologize and commit to changing.

God knows that when we’re sorry in the right way, we will change. We will ask God to forgive us. We will try to love Him and others. And God will comfort us.

Think about it...
• No one likes being sad. When is our sadness actually a good thing?
• We need to feel sorrow about things that make God sad. When we feel bad for the wrong things we do, how does God help us?
• Sometimes we’re only sorry because we got caught. Why is this not good enough?
• When we mourn, God promises to comfort us. How does He do that?

Prayer: Thank you, God, that you have given us the ability to feel sorrow for the bad things we do. It helps us to remember to say sorry and ask you to forgive us. Thank you for giving us second chances.
