Jesus ended his sermon on the mountainside with a number of metaphors to explain how his followers should be and what they should look like. He warned that many people would try to fake their way into heaven, but we should very cautious of these types of people. They don’t really want to obey God; they just want to use Jesus as a means of getting things for themselves, like followers and money or a place in heaven.

God is our good heavenly Father and he promises to treat us well. When we ask for his help, he will provide it. He isn’t out to get us and doesn’t make us earn his love. As his children, he wants us to be like him and to treat others the way we want to be treated…both by other people and by him.

Today’s Lesson - “God is a Good Father”

Video Story/Resource:

Ask, Seek and Knock
Matthew 7:7-12, NLT
“7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
12 “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”

Video lesson:

It is really easy for us to see other people’s faults, but especially difficult to see our own. Sometimes what we need is a really good mirror…which is exactly what the Bible can be for us as Christians. Instead of focusing on the problems other people have, we should first examine ourselves. Am I becoming more like Jesus? Can others see God’s fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, kindness, faithfulness and self-control in me?

Week 22: “Stop Worrying!”
Weekly Bible Bite: Matthew 6:25-34

Video lesson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG1LjFO99dA (Saddleback Kids – Don’t Worry)

Jesus told us that when we focus on doing God’s work, we don’t need to be concerned about what to eat or wear, because God will provide…just like he does for the birds and the flowers. Does this mean that we can stop doing grocery shopping or finding clothing to wear? No. What it means is that we don’t need to worry about making certain there is lots of money in the bank—we don’t have to put our trust in our bank accounts, but God. We don’t have to worry about always having to work for fear we will run out, but can take time off to spend with our families and friends…somethings are more important than a bigger pay cheque. We don’t need to concern ourselves with whether we will have enough money tomorrow, next week, next month or even next year. We need to focus on being obedient to do the things God tells us are important…like being generous, loving God and others, helping the needy, telling others about how much Jesus loves them. When we do, God will in turn help us by providing the things we need.

"Doing Life with Jesus”
Today’s Lesson - “What Masters You?”

Video Story/Resource:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXqReysSupQ (Quiz Worx – Storing Up Treasures)
Which Treasure Are You Collecting?

Matthew 6:19-24, NLT
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
22 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. 23 But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”

Sometimes people think that Jesus taught that money is bad, but that isn’t what he taught at all. Jesus knew that money was a part of life on earth, but he warned that we should not love money. Whether we are rich or poor or somewhere in between, we can become obsessed with money and the things it can buy, like clothes, toys, and electronics. Jesus told us that when that happens, we cannot serve God properly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhyvL0QFKHc (Douglas Talks – How to Pray)

Jesus told us that when we do things for God, we shouldn’t do it so that others will take notice. When we pray, we shouldn’t need a crowd to listen in. When we talk to God, we shouldn’t pray so that others can hear us, but so that God will. God loves it when we pray to him, but if we use prayer as an opportunity for others to give us a pat on the back and tell us how wonderful we are, why should God be happy about that? He isn’t!

Today’s Lesson - “Give In Secret”

Video Story/Resource:

Giving to the Needy
Matthew 6:1-4, NLT

“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. 2 When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. 3 But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4 Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

Jesus had some instructions for adults about how important it was to keep our promises to our husbands/wives and to our families. He also said that people should be able to trust us. When we say something, they should be able to rely on us knowing it is true and that we are committed.

“Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say”

"Doing Life with Jesus”
Today’s Lesson - “Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say”

Video Story/Resource:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2c6XL9E5Yw (Pursue God Kids – Truthfulness)

Teaching About Vows
Matthew 5:33-37, NLT
33 “You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the LORD.’ 34 But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne. 35 And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King. 36 Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. 37 Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”
Jesus told us that when we make a commitment or when we’re trying to convince someone that we are telling the truth, our words should be enough. What we say we will do, we do. What we promise we won’t do, we don’t. What we say is the truth is actually true. If we have a reputation for being honest and reliable, we will not need to try to convince people by making a vow.
