“Now I know for sure that you are a man of God, and that the LORD truly speaks through you.” (1 Kings 17:24)

Prophets were people God used to deliver messages to people. Elijah was a prophet, but he lived at a time when it was dangerous to be a prophet for God. The wicked King Ahab and Queen Jezebel were the rulers and they worshiped Baal. God told Elijah to tell them that there wouldn’t be any rain or dew for the next three years because they didn’t worship the true God. As soon as Elijah delivered the message, he had to go into hiding. King Ahab and Queen Jezebel wanted him dead!

First, God hid Elijah by a river and had ravens bring food to him. But as the drought continued the river dried up. God told Elijah to go and stay with a widow and her son. He found her, but she too was almost out of food. Elijah asked her to make him some bread, and even though she only had a little bit of flour and oil, she agreed. As a result, God made certain that her flour and oil never ran out until there was food again growing in the land.

Elijah stayed obedient to God and did some amazing miracles too. But one of the most incredible stories from Elijah’s life is how God chose to take him to heaven in a fiery chariot. His apprentice Elisha took over Elijah’s work as a prophet, but we’ll get to know more about him tomorrow.

Think about it...
• God gave messages to Elijah to tell people. Do you think being a prophet for God would be an easy or difficult job? Why?
• King Ahab and Queen Jezebel didn’t like Elijah, because they didn’t like God. How did God protect Elijah?
• Imagine you’re the widow who Elijah stayed with. Do you think you would have given him bread when he asked? Why or why not?
• At the end of Elijah’s life, God chose for Elijah not to die. What happened?

Prayer: Thank you, God, for Elijah’s obedience to you. It would not have been easy for him to share your messages, but thank you that you gave him courage. Please give us courage to obey you too.
