Sunday Lesson January 3rd"Fruit of the Spirit" - Last week, we learned how the Holy Spirit wants to grow God’s love in us. Another thing He wants to grow in us is joy. When we live for God we don’t have to always be serious or perpetually happy; God has something better for us known as ‘joy.’
The Fruit of the Spirit - Joy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQwHnmRBSHU (Douglas Talks) Lesson Overview: When we believe in Jesus, He helps us to see things from a new perspective. This new perspective allows us to have hope and joy, even when bad things happen. It isn’t that we have to be happy about bad things, but we can still have joy (or be glad) because we look at things from God’s point of view; bad stuff may happen but I can still have joy: • God loves me...very much! (John 3:16) • God will never leave me. (Hebrews 13:5) • The Holy Spirit will help me. (John 14:26) • Everything that God allows me to experience, is to help me become a better person or to be able to help others. (2 Corinthians 1:3-5) • Life on earth is really just a short amount of time; heaven is forever (1 John 2:17) Engage: How is ‘joy’ different from being ‘happy?’ How can we have joy even when bad things happen? What does a joyful Christian look like? Theme verses: Galatians 5:22-23- “The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Prayer - Thank you, God, that we can experience your joy even while we live in a world where lots of bad things happen. Thank you for giving us hope by allowing us to see things from your perspective--contained in the Bible. When we go through hard times, help us to experience your joy. You don’t expect us to be happy all the time, but we never have to despair because we know that things will get better. Help us to always trust you. Help us to be joyful! Amen
