"Heroes of the Bible” – After Jerusalem was rebuilt, 400 years passed and the people of Israel found themselves captive to first the Persians, then the Greeks and finally the Romans. The desperately wanted the Messiah to come…but first God sent the baby who would grow up to be the Messiah’s prophet—John the Baptist.

Today’s Hero – John the Baptist (Luke 1:1-25, 39-45; Mark 1:1-15; Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 6:14-29)
God was about to fulfill His promise to provide the Messiah—the Rescuer—so God decided to send a prophet to prepare the people for His arrival. John was that prophet and he was a cousin of Jesus, the Messiah. But before the angel Gabriel told Mary she was going to have a baby, he first went to Zechariah and told him about the special baby he and his wife Elizabeth would have. Zechariah didn’t believe Gabriel…he and Elizabeth were too old to have children. To prove that his words were God’s message, the angel told Zechariah that he would not be able to talk until after his son was born. And guess what? Zechariah was unable to speak until it was time to give his baby his name—John!
We don’t know much about John prior to starting his ministry of telling others to prepare for the coming Messiah. We do know, however, that he lived in the wilderness, had clothes made from camel hair and he ate locusts (like a grasshopper) and honey. That’s sounds pretty strange…and people who lived when John did thought so too. But he was very convincing. Many people got their lives right with God because of John’s messages. John was not afraid to tell people that what they were doing was wrong and this sometimes got him into trouble.
One time he even went to the king and corrected him! The king’s wife, Herodias, wasn’t happy with this and thought John should be punished. So, as a favour to his wife, Herod locked up John. And things didn’t go well. John ended up being beheaded. Serving God doesn’t always mean that you’ll never have problems, but John was always obedient and that’s what was most important. He told everyone about the coming Messiah and got them ready for the beginning of Jesus’ work as the Rescuer.
• The angel Gabriel told Zachariah that he and his wife Elizabeth were going to have a baby. Why did Zachariah not believe the angel?
• John wasn’t overly concerned with how he looked, what he ate or the clothes he wore. What did he think was more important?
• John baptized many people, even Jesus. Why did John think he wasn’t good enough to baptize Jesus?
• John ended up dying for being obedient to God. Do you think John regretted being chosen to be the Messiah’s prophet?
Matthew 11:11, NLT – “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is!"
Prayer – Dear God, thank you that you always fulfill your promises. You promised that you would send a rescuer and you did. You even sent a prophet to prepare people that the time had come. Thank you that we can always count on you!
