“Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.” (2 Samuel 7:16)

After King Saul died in battle, many of the Israelites wanted his son, Ishbosheth, to be their king. But God had already said that David would be the next king and the tribe of Judah supported him. It took seven years, but eventually all of the Israelites realized that David was God’s choice to be the next king. David brought peace to the people with God’s help as he battled their enemies.

David wanted to honour God and decided to build a Temple for Him, a place to keep the Ark of the Covenant, rather than in the tent it was kept in. God recognized that David had good intentions for wanting to do so, but told him that it was his son, not him who would build a Temple. But God also had a surprise for David. God told him that there would always be a king from David’s family to rule—his line would continue forever. It was a very big honour! And God made good on his promise to David when Jesus, one of King David’s descendants, was born. Jesus wasn’t just a king like David; he is also God and He is king over everything for all time, just as God had promised.

Think about it...
• Some people wanted Saul’s son to be their king. But who had God decided would be Israel’s next king?
• David became king when he was 30 years old; even though he was pretty young, he was able to accomplish some great things for the people. Why was David so successful in his early days?
• When Israel had peace, David wanted to honour God by building a Temple to him. Why did God not let David build it?
• Even though David was not allowed to build the Temple, God was pleased with him. What promise did God make to David?

Prayer: Thank you, God, that when we trust you like David, you will help us. We thank you too, that we have Jesus as our king. We can trust that he will always be a good king—not mistakes like Saul or David. Help us to obey you as good followers.
